Phonological Change

Sounds in all the living languages of the world are subject to a greater tide of variation and change than almost any other domain. The branches of Ortho-Kurdish, as a highly active, living, and dynamic language, have undergone a set of sound and phonological changes that are entirely normal among the living languages of the world, particularly the Eurasian languages, which have repeatedly come under the influence of one another’s cultural traditions and incursions. From a linguistic perspective, I wish to shed light on this important subject, which often presents difficulties for speakers of the dialects. In view of the phonological differences among these varieties, the discussion concerns the number of phonemes from a phonetic standpoint; their distribution into vowels and consonants; and the participation of phonemes in syllables, words, phrases, sentences, and so forth.

The processes contributing to the formation of this pattern include:

• Assimilation
• Dissimilation
• Elision
• Metathesis
• Mutation
• Palatalization

For this reason, Kurdish shares extensive phonetic and lexical boundaries with most languages related to it, namely the Iranian and Indo-European languages, and has conspicuously undergone sound convergence, merger, and metathesis. The phenomenon of assimilation has produced these changes in two forms: complete assimilation and incomplete assimilation.

Consonantal changes within Kurdish take the following forms:

The change of the consonant /b/ to /w/ in speech

The two correspond to one another but differ in voicing, particularly in Pahlavi. Examples:
باران، واران/ خراو، خراب/ ئاو، ئاب/ بەراز، وەراز/ بەد، وەد/ بەرخ، وەرخ/ بەڵگ، وەڵگ/ بەفر، وەفر/ بەهار، وەهار/ بانگ، وانگ/ بازاڕ، وازاڕ.

The change of /x/ to /k/ in Pahlavi:

ساخ، ساک/ مەلەخ، مەلەک/ سیخۆر، سیکۆر.

The change of /h/ to /x/ in Avestan and Pahlavi:

خۆر، هۆر/ خۆرمە، هۆرمە/ خون، هون/ خۆسرۆ، هۆسرۆ.

The change of /z/ to /ژ/, as in:

تیژ، تیز/ درێژ، درێز/ ژن، زن/ ژەهر، زەهر/ دژ، دز/ مژگێنی، مزگێنی/ بیژمار، بیزمار.

The change of /s/ to /sh/:

ششتن، سشتن/ ئاش، ئاس/

The change of /b/ to /v/, as in:

تاڤ، تاب/ نەڤی، نەبی/ فڕیو، فڕیب.

Regressive assimilation, /d/ to /t/:

کردتەوە، کرتتەوە/ بردتەوە، برتتۆ/ هێناتەوە، هاورتتۆ/ بردتان، برتتان/

Assimilation through devoicing, /z/ to /s/:

نازک، ناسک/ بازک، باسک/ سک، زک/ بەرزتر، بەرستر.

/ژ/ to /sh/, as in: ڕۆژتان باش، ڕۆشتان باش/ تیژتر، تیشتر/ ڕژان، ڕشان.

/b/ to /p/, as in: بسکێت، پسکێت

Assimilation in voicing, /s/ to /z/:

سڵق، زڵق/ سۆپا، زۆپا/ تەسبیح، تەزبیح/ دەستگیرە، دەزتگیرە/ دەستگیران، دەزگیران.

/k/ to /g/, as in:

چناکە، چناگە/ جاجک، جاجگ.

/b/ to /p/, as in:

باقڵە، پاقلە/ باتری، پاتری/ بەتانی، پەتانی/ پەتاتە، بەتاتە/ باس، پاس/ خراب، خراپ.

Assimilation in velarization, as in:

/l/ to /ڵ/: کەماڵ، کەمال/ جەماڵ، جەمال/ خەیاڵ، خەیال/ خالد، خاڵد.

Consonant deletion, as with /t/:

ڕاست، ڕاس/ وەستا، وەسا/ پێسن، پێس/ دەست، دەس/ ماست، ماس/ مەبەست، مەبەس/ دەربەست، دەربەس/ زستان، زمسان/ پێویست، پێوس/ نێوەڕاست، نێوەڕاس.

The phoneme /d/, as in: دوانزدە، دوانزە/ سێنزدە، سێنزە/ یانزدە، یازدە/ شانزدە، شانزە/ خودا، خوا/ منداڵ، مناڵ.

The phoneme /g/, as in:

ڕەنگ، ڕەن/ برژانگ، برژان/ مەنگ، مەن/ چەنگ، چەن/ بازنگ، بازن/ پڵنگ، پڵن/ بانگدان، باندان.

Consonant to consonant, such as /w/ to /f/:

سێو، سێف/ چەوت، چەفت/ جوت، جفت/ حەوت، حەفت/ نەوت، نەفت/ بەفر، بەور/ مزگەوت، مزگەفت/ خەوتن، خەفتن/ کەوتن، کەفتن.

/w/ to /m/, as in:

نیو، نیم/ هەتیو، هەتیم/ نیوەڕۆ، نیمەڕۆ/ داوێن، دامێن/ جوێن، جمان/ خێوەت، خێمە.

/b/ to /w/: قەساب، قەساو/ قوربان، قوروان/ خەبەر، خەوەر/ خراو، خراب/ سابوون، ساوێن/ بیبەر، بیوەر/ دەربەن، دەروەن/ سەبەتە، سەوەتە.

/ئـ/ to /h/: ئەسب، هەسب/ هەڵبەتە، ئەڵبەتە/ ئەژدیها، هەژدیها/ ئێوارێ، هێوارێ/ ئاسان، هاسان/ هەستێرە، ئەستێرە.

/ئـ/ to /ع/: عەشق، ئەشق/ عەزیز، ئەزیز/ ئاسمان، عاسمان/ عەرز، ئەرز/ قورئان، قورعان/ ئەقڵ، عەقڵ/ ئەشق، عەشقق.

/v/ to /w/: ئاو، ئاڤ/ چاو، چاڤ/ گاو، گاڤ/ باو، باڤ/ باوان، باڤان/ تاوگە، تاڤگە/ ئەوین، ئەڤین.
